In the modern age, technology has become an essential part of our lives. It connects us with people from all around the world and informs us on a variety of topics that we otherwise would not have known about without it. But what does this tech revolution mean for healthcare? The ‘Lighthouse Projects’ in clinical disciplines chronic diseases Epilepsy, Haemophilia and Bipolar Disorder answer these questions by using information technology within health to help patients manage their condition more easily as well as educate them on how they can live healthier lifestyles based off medical recommendations.
The Challenge
Providing Individualised Services and Care in Epilepsy (PISCES) is a Lighthouse Project with a number of partners including HSE, eHealth Ireland, Epilepsy Ireland, RCSI and Beaumont. In the past there were no ways for patients to accurately record their medical details electronically which created numerous problems such as lack of records or confusion about prescription dosages – something that PISCES aims to change!
The Solution
The PISCES Project has made it their goal to improve care for those in Ireland with epilepsy. The team’s solution is the Electronic Patient Record and patient portal app, which focuses exclusively on patients’ needs. Both a mobile-first cloud based application, this system allows caregivers anywhere can access all of your medical information from any location or setting. The project will also develop a BI solution that allows clinicians to securely view aggregated patient data and use it in order to analyse their patients’ behaviour patterns, which may help doctors make future decisions.
“I think it definitely is a step of independence for a lot of people that don’t have that at all. They feel like they are kind of controlling in some way an illness that you can’t control at all.”
Clinicians can now streamline their view of patient information through the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) – a single source for truth where all medical records, genetic data, and treatment plans are recorded. This new system has simplified documenting decisions as well as tracking agreed actions with other clinicians nationwide.
